Nalavaalvu – A General Health Advisory Service

  1. What is Nallavaalvu?
This is a free telephone advisory service in Tamil on general health-related matters by medically qualified doctors from Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni (JMFOA UK), a registered charity in the UK.

  2. Why did JMFOA initiate Nallavaalvu (History of Nallavaalvu)?
London is one of the world’s most severely affected significant cities by the COVID-19 infection. Most of the Sri Lankan population lives around the Greater London area. During the early part of the pandemic, many Sri Lankans have died, and multiple tragic incidents have occurred in the Tamil community. Throughout the lockdown period, the Sri Lankan population have faced an increasing number of unsolved medical, psychological and family-related issues. This was partly because they found it difficult or impossible to contact their GPs or hospital doctors as the NHS was overstretched due to the high volume of work from the pandemic. This resulted in a state of panic and desperation amongst the Sri Lankan community. Jaffna medical faculty overseas alumni in the UK (JMFOA UK) has been a registered charity. Its members are medically qualified Sri Lankan doctors currently working or having previously worked in the NHS. As such, it is better positioned to help the desperate Sri Lankan community. JMFOA UK launched a free telephone advisory service in Tamil called Nallavaalvu on 12th May 2020 to provide an advisory service on health-related queries and signpost them to the appropriate services.
